Jenny Holland, senior staff writer at National Geographic, wrote a wonderful article this month about origami.
She accompanied the article with a great blog on the National Geographic website documenting her own attempts at trying her hand at origami for the first time – with a generous mention of Between the Folds.
The jury of the 2009 SCINEMA Film Festival has awarded Between the Folds the honor of BEST FILM.
SCINEMA, a science film, video and multimedia festival, brings a rich film program as well as a number of guest speakers to 150+ towns and venues throughout Australia – from Cairns to Hobart, and Sydney to Perth – as part of National Science Week, August 15 – 23, 2009.
Festival director Cris Kennedy contacted us with the good news, passing along the jury’s statement, honoring the film:
“…for so elegantly and succinctly capturing the science of art and the art of science.”
We’re extremely humbled by this award and we promise to post a photo of it upon its arrival in Brooklyn, which – we hear – is a “hand-crafted trophy that doubles as a kaleidoscope, made from Australian timbers”!!
It will probably sit next to the Granny Award (a large mass of granite) which we won in New Hampshire (The Granite State)!
ITVS’s Community Cinema has selected Between the Folds as one of the 9 monthly films for its fantastic national film series.
The film will tour cities across the country throughout the month of November 2009 for FREE screenings at libraries, museums and other public spaces.
Each screening will include a post-film panel for broader audience discussion. We’re exceptionally thrilled that Between the Folds, along with ITVS and Community Cinema and viewers across the country, will be part of a growing interdisciplinary dialogue about art, design, math, science and creativity.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll have more details on dates, times and venues. Check back for more information.
Last week, ITVS held a retreat at its San Francisco HQ to discuss the upcoming Community Cinema season and meet with filmmakers and ITVS staff, including our very own fabulous executive producer, Sally Rosenthal.
Sally blogged about the day here on the Community Cinema website.

PBS’s Emmy Award-winning series Independent Lens has selected Between the Folds for its incredible Fall 2009/2010 Season. The broadcast date is set for December 22 (though it’s important to check your local listings).
We’re exceptionally honored to be part of this incredible annual line-up, and we look forward to sharing this project – and the remarkable artists and scientists it features – with the PBS audience.
More details will be coming soon. In the meantime, you can learn more about Independent Lens here.
From the their website: Airing weekly on PBS, the Emmy Award-winning series Independent Lens is like an independent film festival in your living room. Each episode introduces new documentaries and dramas made by independent thinkers: filmmakers who are taking creative risks, calling their own shots and finding untold stories in unexpected places.
ARTStem, at the Kenan Institute, hosted a screening of Between the Folds this past weekend as part of its annual conference exploring the intersection of math, science and art. The conference – whose initiative, in their words, is “inspired by artists and scholars who efface the lines between “the arts” and the “STEM” disciplines of science, engineering, technology, and mathematics” – followed the screening with an open conversation for all attending participants.
On July 26, the Bridges Organization will screen Between the Folds at its annual conference in Banff, Canada.
Featured artists and scientists Dr. Robert J. Lang, Dr. Erik Demaine, Martin Demaine and Chri K. Palmer will all be in attendance at the screening.
The annual Bridges International Conference brings together practicing mathematicians, scientists, artists, educators, musicians, writers, computer scientists, sculptures, dancers, weavers, and model builders in a lively and highly charged atmosphere of mutual exchange and encouragement.
The Brooklyn International Film Festival honored Between the Folds with the prestigious Documentary Audience Award at this weekend’s closing award’s ceremony, following a sold-out screening of the film.
It was a particularly special weekend as the film’s executive producer Sally Rosenthal, composer Gil Talmi and featured subject and origami mathematician Dr. Tom Hull were all present, along with director and producer Vanessa Gould.
We were quite impressed by BIFF and wish to thank everyone who came out to the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, as well as Nate Kensinger and everyone else at the festival for such a fabulous weekend!
The Indie Spirit Film Festival in Colorado named Between the Folds as Best Documentary for their 2009 festival. We’re grateful to Chris Loud, Matthew Stevens and everyone at the Independent Film Society of Colorado for this award.
